Brisbane, Schemes and Dreams, Nineteenth Century Arrivals, 2014 (202 pages). Edited by Jennifer Harrison & Barry Shaw
This volume of papers owes its origin to the BHG seminar ‘150 years ago – Profiles of Brisbane in 1842’ held the Commissariat Stores, William Street, Brisbane.
A number of the papers presented on that day have been published separately, this collection focuses on immigration, the difficulties and challenges for the early settlers and schemes to encourage migration. Not all of the schemes and dreams were successful but overall the chapters tell of groups and individuals who were prepared to rise to each new challenge in their determination to make a better life for themselves in early Brisbane.
