Overview of The Brisbane History Group

The Brisbane History Group was formed in February 1981 to encourage and promote the study of Brisbane’s history. The Brisbane History Group:

  • Is a not-for-profit organisation which was established to research and preserve the history of Brisbane and its environs
  • Is a lively, active group that presents the city’s history in an authoritative, reliable and relevant form suited to the new century and for all members of the community
  • Has played a significant role in persuading governments to establish heritage legislation and makes representations when heritage values are threatened
  • Publishes a range of books, papers and discussions which are sought by libraries, schools and tertiary institutions
  • Produces a newsletter at regular intervals  throughout the year which keeps members informed about the work of the committee, forthcoming events, heritage issues and special promotions
  • Encourages links between the academic world and the wider community..
  • Fosters sound research methodology and provides opportunities for novice historians to develop their skills
  • Presents the history and heritage of Brisbane through seminars, book launches, bus and walking tours and river cruises
  • Promotes research into facets of Brisbane history and, through its seminar days, provides a venue for making research findings more widely known
  • Possesses a valuable collection of reference and research materials, the BHG Research Library, dedicated to the history and heritage of the Brisbane region, and accessible to all members by prior arrangement
  • Encourages co-operation with other historical/heritage bodies
  • Will achieve more and speak with greater authority when it has the backing of a large committed membership.

Membership

The Brisbane History Group owes its longevity to its members who over the years have contributed their time, expertise and enthusiasm organising and participating in seminars and like events, publishing high quality historical research material and attending to ongoing administration.  Membership is open to anyone who has an interest in the history of Brisbane and the surrounding region. Active participation is encouraged (we are a volunteer based organisation) but not a pre-requisite. Membership does, however, bring with it a number of benefits. Members receive reduced admission rates to our events, discount on BHG publications, and copies of our Newsletter.

Annual membership fees are:

$30.00   (Standard rate)
$40.00   (Family/Group rate)

To apply for membership of the Brisbane History Group simply complete the BHG Membership Application and then return it with your payment (refer  Contact Us)
